This Talkpod A36Plus GMRS Radio is a compact and multifunctional radio. It has a solid build quality and feels like it can take some drops and bumps. The LCD display is bright, but the contrast and viewing angles are just average. You don't require a license in Canada to operate like amateur radio as this operates in in GMRS/FRS bands. Despite having a higher power rating of 8W, you won't be able to take advantage as FRS maxes at 2W. All 462 MHz channels are limited to 2W and in Canada, GMRS repeaters are not permitted. However, the functionality and operation of the A36Plus is so much cooler than those FRS radios. It does have a long antenna, which makes it a bit trickier to pack for travel compared to the ultra-compact FRS radios.
The A36Plus has other features making it great to have nearby for emergencies. It can receive NOAA weather alerts, can tune into AM/FM radio stations and has dedicated SOS alarm button. You can charge via USB-C or with the included docking station and comes with an extra 1500mAh battery. Overall, the A36Plus is a great GMRS radio with many other useful features, making it great for many use cases, including emergency situations.
