RENO, NEVADA – There is nothing more rewarding in the world of amateur radio than seeing a young, dedicated student achieve their licensing goals. Today, Talkpod is proud to share a heartwarming update from our partners in the field, highlighting the continued impact of the Talkpod Youth Amateur Program.
A Milestone for a Young Maker
In a recent licensing session led by Krystal Nelson (N6KDN), twelve-year-old Brayden McLaughlin proved that age is no barrier to technical excellence. After weeks of rigorous study, Brayden successfully passed his Technician license exam.
To celebrate this achievement, Doug (W7DBE) and Krystal presented Brayden with his very own Talkpod handheld radio, pre-programmed and ready for his first "CQ." According to the team, Brayden was not only relieved to pass but was "even more excited" to receive the radio. His first mission? Teaching his family about the hobby so they can join him on the airwaves.
Talkpod's Youth Amateur Program: Building Bridges
This success story is exactly why the Talkpod Youth Amateur Program exists. We believe that providing high-quality, reliable equipment to young "hams" is the key to transforming a passed exam into a lifelong passion for communication technology.
"One of the candidates was a 12-year-old young man that had been studying really hard... He was even more excited when Doug, W7DBE and I presented him with a Talkpod that Doug had programmed for him." — Krystal Nelson, N6KDN
By putting professional-grade tools into the hands of the next generation, we are helping ensure the future of the amateur radio community remains vibrant, diverse, and technically proficient.
Our Vision: More Hams, More Connections
As we continue to expand our Youth Program globally—from North America to the UK and beyond—our goal remains simple: We want every new user to truly enjoy their radio time. Whether it’s through supporting local club exam sessions, donating equipment for youth prizes, or developing beginner-friendly features like those found in the A36plus series, Talkpod is committed to making the "shack" an inviting place for everyone.
We want to extend a massive thank you to mentors like Doug and Krystal, and organizations like SNARS, who do the heavy lifting of education and testing. Congratulations, Brayden! We look forward to hearing you on the air.
