Powering Up the Next Generation: The Talkpod Youth Program Hits the Southeastern Virginia Regional Hamfest

NEWPORT NEWS, VA August 8, 2026

When passion meets technology, incredible things happen. On August 8, 2026, the local tech and radio community gathered at the Knights of Columbus Hall for the Southeastern Virginia Regional Hamfest and Swap Meet.

Hosted by the Tidewater Radio Conventions, this officially sanctioned ARRL Hamfest brought together makers, engineers, and radio enthusiasts for a day of gear swapping, technical deep-dives, and community building. We were absolutely thrilled to be part of the energy this year, bringing the Talkpod Youth Amateur Program to the heart of Virginia.

Why We Were There

At Talkpod, we engineer hardware for professionals, but our hearts belong to the community. We believe the future of global communications rests in the hands of today’s young makers and STEM students. However, we also know that jumping into amateur radio can feel intimidating for beginners.

That’s where the Talkpod Youth Amateur Program comes in. Our mission is simple: lower the barrier to entry, provide accessible, high-quality technology, and inspire the next wave of innovators.

At the Southeastern Virginia Hamfest, our focus was on:

Fueling Curiosity: Getting intuitive, reliable radios into the hands of newly licensed technicians and young students, allowing them to experience the magic of over-the-air communication instantly.
Connecting Generations: Bridging the gap between seasoned "Elmers" (mentors) and young tech enthusiasts, fostering a space where decades of RF knowledge can be passed down.
Backing Local Communities: Supporting grassroots organizations like the Tidewater Radio Conventions, because local clubs are the true incubators for technical talent.

The Hamfest Vibe

The atmosphere in Newport News was fantastic. From the active talk-in on the 146.73- (Tone 100) repeater to the crowded swap tables, it was a prime example of why the amateur radio community is so resilient and dynamic. We loved talking shop with veteran operators, sharing insights on our latest firmware, and—most importantly—seeing the excitement on the faces of young attendees discovering the hobby for the first time.

A Massive Thank You

We want to send a huge shoutout to Carl Clements (W4CAC) and the entire organizing team at Tidewater Radio Conventions for putting together such a flawless and welcoming event.

To everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, or learn more about how to get young people involved in radio—thank you. Your passion is what drives us to keep innovating.

Stay tuned, stay connected, and we’ll catch you on the airwaves!
