The Talkpod Youth Program at the 2026 WCARC Hamfest - Empowering Colorado’s Next-Gen Makers

GRAND JUNCTION, CO August 8, 2026

Set against the stunning backdrop of Colorado's Western Slope, the local tech and amateur radio community came out in full force on August 8, 2026. The Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club, Inc. (WCARC) hosted their annual ARRL-sanctioned Hamfest & Swapmeet at the First Christian Church, and Talkpod was proud to be in the mix, bringing our Youth Amateur Program directly to the Rockies.

Connecting the Peaks: Why We Show Up

At Talkpod, we engineer communication tools to bridge distances, but our community initiatives are designed to bridge generations. The amateur radio hobby is a phenomenal gateway into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), yet getting started can sometimes feel like climbing a mountain for young enthusiasts.

Through the Talkpod Youth Amateur Program, we are actively working to level the playing field. At the WCARC Hamfest, our goals were clear:

Equipping the Future: Putting reliable, easy-to-use Talkpod radios into the hands of newly licensed young operators, ensuring their first experience on the airwaves is seamless and exciting.
Supporting Local Mentorship: Empowering veteran operators—the true backbone of local clubs like WCARC—with the modern hardware they need to teach and inspire the next wave of radio engineers.
Fostering Innovation: Sparking a lifelong passion for RF technology, emergency communications, and global connectivity in young makers.

The WCARC Hamfest Experience

The energy in Grand Junction was incredible. WCARC put on a technically impressive event, complete with a robust talk-in network utilizing Simplex 146.460 and an impressive web of linked repeaters across Black Ridge, Grand Mesa, and Waterdog. It was a perfect demonstration of the technical prowess that defines the amateur radio community.

Between the bustling swap meet tables and the engaging technical discussions, we loved connecting with the Colorado ham community. Hearing your feedback, talking about our latest firmware updates, and watching seasoned operators guide young enthusiasts through their first equipment choices is exactly what drives our innovation.

A Huge Thank You

We want to send a massive thank you to Cathy Maddox (KF0OKV) and the entire organizing team at the Western Colorado Amateur Radio Club for hosting such an outstanding and welcoming event.

To the operators of Grand Junction: thank you for your passion, your expertise, and your dedication to keeping the airwaves alive. We look forward to catching you—and the new youth operators you’ve inspired—on the air very soon!
